Welcome Jackie!

Let’s talk heroes.

No, not the NBC television show, although I love that program and can’t wait for season three to start. I’m talking about heroes in novels. Specifically, in paranormals. (Note, I’m not saying “romance.” I mean the darker stories, the ones that have things going bump in the night, where the boogeyman is real and the shadows have teeth. And, hopefully, a sense of humor.)

What makes a hero work for a reader? Does he have to be dashing? Smart? Sexy? Funny? Does he always do what’s right? Does he serve a higher purpose? What it is about heroes that make us root for them? Why do we want the heroes to win?

And are antiheroes more compelling than their clean-cut good guy cousins?

Me, I’ve always preferred Batman to Superman. The Man of Steel was always too good for my taste. He was Wonder Bread with a cape; the only thing bigger than his jaw was his sense of altruism. He’s all about abiding by the law. Sure, he’s all about good versus evil, too, but he plays by the rules. He’s a grown up boy scout.

Now Batman, he plays by his own rules. He’s absolutely about good versus evil, but he doesn’t sweat the small stuff, like not breaking laws or bones. He’s dark where Superman is light. Batman is grim where Superman flashes his pearly whites. Batman is freaking sexy, and Superman is…well, nice to look at, sure. But he’s so good and pure that he’s untouchable. Batman? He’s dirty. And very touchable.

Daun, the protagonist of HOTTER THAN HELL, is way more of an antihero than a hero. Hell, he’s barely an antihero. He’s evil, period. He seduces evil people, screws them to death, then takes their souls to Hell. And he loves his job. He has a very dark sense of humor, and he’s damn sexy. But it’s when a good woman gets thrown into his life that Daun truly grows. When he starts caring about her, he morphs from protagonist to antihero…and even becomes a hero of sorts by the end of the book.

Let’s talk heroes. What are they, if they don’t have love? Not necessarily the love of another person, but love of a cause? An ideal? Can there be a hero without passion?

Who are your favorite heroes? Why?

–Jackie

    Hi Jackie

I think there\’s a reason cliches are cliches and the old one about women loving bad boys is so often true. To go back to your Superman vs Batman point, for me Superman instantly gets sexier when he\’s bad. In Smallville when Clark gets feisty because of red kryptonite I am instantly more attracted to him, and it\’s nothing to do with the leather trousers… Okay, it\’s a little lot to do with the leather trousers. It\’s the same with Angel, I find him sooo much hotter as Angelus. Again, nothing to do with the leather trousers….

In books, it tends to be the bad guys I fall for too. I love Kresley Cole\’s heroes - I want Cade\’s little demon babies. A sense of humour is another biggy for me, I want a man to make me laugh and then pin me to the bed (floor, wall, I\’m not fussy) and ravage me! Daun sounds exactly the type of hero to make me dribble! Can\’t wait to read the book.

I remember watching Cool Hand Luke in highschool to learn the concept of the antihero. I\\\’ve loved the depth and darkness and journey of that character type ever since. To get an anti-hero to be heroic, you have to really be something special, something that will make him change his (often very stubborn) mind, to go against his instinct.

Spike (BtVS) is a good example of that type of hero. He loves deeply, and it makes him go against both his better and his worse natures.

I already have a signed copy of the book, so please don\’t enter me in the contest. I just wanted to stop by and say how great of a book this is! As for my favorite heroes–I don\’t care what they are, as long as they make me laugh, make me cry, and/or make me shake my head and mutter, \

o lol yep i was confused..part of my page was cute off..whoops…can i still answer??? my fave heros are the ones who don\’t start out as heros. A great hero is one who has to work to get to that point. I love it when a minor character you thought was an a$$ in a book and then he gets his own story and you realize why he\’s that why and get to watch him become that hero…anyway that my opinion…luv ya jax

Blake, I\’m glad you figured it out, LOL! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Gosh, Daun isn\’t **anything** like that, hee hee hee…

Leigh: Ooh. Demon babies. **rubs hands gleefully** The fun I could have with that… And I totally agree with you. Angelus was YUMMY. And I adored Spike until he went and got a soul. Alas. (And did you notice that they did weird things with leather trousers in that show? I distinctly remember Buffy wearing **pink** leather pants, and I was like, Why would you do that to a good pair of leather pants?)

Garnigal, I haven\’t seen Cool Hand Luke, but now I really have to. :)

    Hi, Jackie! **Jackie K. waves**

Rachel, I agree. Bad girls are awesome. I think that\’s part of why urban fantasy works so well: even the good girls are allowed to be bad.

Never could get into Superman. Way too whitewashed, too goody-goody. Give me a dark, broody, dangerous hero anytime. Daun sounds wonderful; he’s definitely going onto my TBR list!

Wow, this looks like a fantastic book from what I read here - once I stopped drooling over the cover! I think you\’re right about the whole Superman over Batman theory. Here\’s my take on why one is more appealing than the other: Superman is so goody-goody, you would have to be, too, in order to be with him and who, among us, is truly a saint? Batman, on the other hand, is more accessible - and wouldn\’t raise an eyebrow over the occasional slip of a cuss word. He\’s probably said a few himself. Besides, aren\’t the dark and twisty ones always more interesting to know - and to try to cure? Who wouldn\’t want to try to make things better for him?

Jackie…. thanks for blogging with us today.

My favorite hero is definitely the bad boy. No squeaky clean guys who always want to do the right thing for me. Boring!

The hero that strangely enough pops into mind whom I find very interesting is Snake Plisskin from Escape from New York. He’s a bad-ass, scared, and dangerous to deal with, a criminal forced to be a good guy. Perfect! :-) Plus, Kurt Russell was pretty hot with that patch.

I like the ones that appear good, but underneath do what needs to be done to win the day. Nothing truely evil, nothing to turn me off, but just enough to keep my attention. I’m not sure I really care for the true bad boys. I need some redeeming quality for me to forgive them when they’re bad. :)

I think sometimes it can be a real challenge to make a good guy whose got it all going on - looks, money, an honest and dependable personality - as interesting as the bad boy “with the heart of gold”. A challenge, but fun, too. So says the woman who just finished writing a Blaze with a very good, very sexy (hopefully!) hero with those particular attributes, anyway…LOL

Jackie, great to see you here! I’m excitedly awaiting my copy of Hotter than Hell from Amazon! :D

I\’ve found good guys and bad guys to be great heros if the writer has written them well, but I tend to really love reading about the bad boys. I\’m not likely to pursue one in real life so I can fantasize in books instead. ;-)

First can I say I love the cover :D

In my opinion the best heroes are the ones that grab us by our hearts regardless of how ‘bad’ they seem to be. My personal favourite heroes are Vanyel from Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar series and Zarek from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter Series. Both are misunderstood and endure great hardships before finding a modicum of peace with the love of their life.
